First made in 1998, it takes its name from a wild plant that grows abundantly on the estate, Cornelian cherry or cornus mas. This wine strongly represents the vision of its creator, with an eye to the valorization of the territory and to innovation achieved through traditions that evolve. The base of the wine is Sangiovese – from clones from the oldest vineyard on the estate, Vigna dell’Impero, which was planted by Amedeo, Duke of Savoy-Aosta in 1935. This historic variety was grafted in vineyards with stony soils rich in marl. Only the best Sangiovese grapes are selected, which make up the majority of the wine. A small quantity of Merlot is added, which gives smoothness, immediacy, and color to the wine.
An average winter overall, in terms of both temperature and rainfall, ensured the budding season began at the expected time for the Chianti Classico region. The spring season, especially the month of May, was characterized by frequent rain and temperatures that were slightly below the seasonal average. On the whole, the summer months were hot and dry, with no drastic temperature variations. This climate provided the ideal conditions for the ripening stage of the grapes, which ended on a perfect note with rainfall in August and a dry and ventilated September. The Sangiovese grape harvest commenced on the 10th of September. Sangiovese produces very fragrant wines with a net dry extract of over 22 g/L, which gives them a rich full-body and lots of personality.
