We are a family owned estate winery. We aspire to make great wine from two distinct vineyard sites in the central coast of California. THE NINER FAMILY Richard Niner grew up as one of eight children raised on a farm in rural West Virginia. He spent his childhood working on the farm to provide food for his family, and eventually became one of the first in his family to attend college. He graduated from Princeton and then Harvard Business School. He then began a long and respected career building small businesses across a variety of industries, from sunglasses to machine parts. He eventually met Pam in New York City, while she was working as a magazine editor after graduating from Smith College in Massachusetts. The pair married and had two children, Andy & Katy. This return to farming was a return to his West Virginia roots, and in his mind one of the ultimate crops to work with. He purchased his first vineyard in 2001and spent the next deCade building out the rest of the business and hiring a team to help run it. Our tasting room & winery opened in Spring of 2010 and remains the heart of our estate. Eventually, Andy took over the day-to-day management of the business and we remain family owned and operated today. In the deCade since opening our tasting room doors, we have expanded the business to include a restaurant, Chef’s Garden and full roster of creative experiences for your visit. In the early 1990s, one of Richard’s ventures introduced him to the beauty of the Central Coast. The people here reminded him of his upbringing in West Virginia, and he saw the high potential for the area to compete with premier wine regions like Napa, which was booming at the time. OUR WINEMAKING PHILOSOPHY WINEMAKERS PATRICK & MOLLY Our goal is to grow high quality grapes and make delicious wines that are intentionally crafted to tell the story of each vintage and vineyard. In the winery, we strive to preserve the most unique qualities of each vineyard and vintage. We want to express those qualities alongside elegance and balance, using minimal inputs. We are lucky to have two Winemakers. Winemaker Molly Bohlman is responsible for our wines from Jespersen Ranch and Patrick Muran is responsible for Heart Hill Vineyard & Bootjack Ranch wines. This division by vineyard allows us to fully focus on bringing the intricacies of each site forward in our wines. All wines are fermented, aged and bottled at our estate winery located at Heart Hill Vineyard.
VINEYARDS The 2019 vintage was excellent at both Bootjack Ranch and Heart Hill Vineyard. Ample rainfall and moderate tempera- tures led to a long, even growing season. When harvest arrived in the Fall, we were able to take our time and selectively har- vest grape clusters at their peak ripeness, without the rush that late season heat or rain can cause. Most of the grapes for this wine (82%) were grown at Bootjack Ranch in the Geneseo District of Paso Robles with the balance (18%) from Heart Hill Vineyard in the Willow Creek District. Given the differences between the two sites we harvested grapes for this wine in several different picks between 9/18 and 10/25. We hand-picked all the grapes at night delivering them to the winery by 4 in the morning. IN THE WINERY We hand-sorted, destemmed and grav- ity-fed the grapes into closed top stain- less steel tanks. We fermented each varietal separately in order to preserve their unique characteristics and after 18 months composed the blend. We then put the blend back into barrel to integrate for another 8 months. We aged it for a total of 26 months in French oak, 45% of which was new. At its core this blend features three varietals each contributing a different element to the blend. We start with Cabernet Franc as it provides a struc- tural foundation (dry tannin). We then layer in Cabernet for it’s complex red fruit and finally Malbec adds a mouthwatering juicy quality. This is a wine that is ready to drink now that broadly showcases the beauty of our two vineyards during an excellent vintage.
